Dan Schnur, a Republican consultant, said Davis is being forced to rely on the most liberal elements of the Democratic party, which will ultimately hurt him.
"I heard him call himself a progressive for the first time in 30 years," said Schnur. "But the more liberal he becomes, the more he motivates his opposition."
Indeed, some observers noted that Davis spent nearly an hour with former President Clinton while in Chicago at the federation of labor meeting. The governor also used a line Monday that Clinton himself could have said during trying times, about "taking a lot of grief these past several weeks but not nearly as much as the average Californian."
